On The Farm...at Bishop Museum

The Hawaii State Farm Fair was this past weekend at the Bishop Museum. This year, the focus was more on actual farming, rather than crazy rides or fairway games. The Bishop Museum was the perfect spot for it--the museum exhibits were all open, so you could check out the animals (from 4H clubs around the state; I heard that some of the animals came to Honolulu on the Super Ferry), shop the farmer's market, eat at North Shore Cattle Company (among other great local  food stands) AND see all that Bishop Museum has to offer. Plus, you could see things like this pig, drinking water. And hear a sheep "baaa." It was a lot different in person than it was in the nursery rhymes, I'm telling you.

Absolutely Mad for "Mad Men"

I had been meaning to watch this show for some time now. It's been on for one season on AMC--the 2nd season starts on July 27th. I was thinking about renting it, since it's on DVD. And then my boyfriend pointed out that it's on HD OnDemand (channel 1900 on Oceanic Digital Cable) for free. Great, I thought, I'll check it out, see if I like it. I sat down last night to watch the first episode, and 5 episodes later, I'm hooked. I love the period aspect of the show--it takes place in New York in 1960--as well as the fact that it's focused around the employees of an ad agency--my first job in New York was at an advertising agency. The world of "Mad Men" is a world of chain-smoking, Scotch-swilling, male chauvinism, and racism--sounds hideous yet is actually riveting. The New York Times Sunday Magazine did a cover story on the show, and now I see why. If you can, catch up before Season 2 begins in a couple of weeks.

This Face Just Kills Me

I know I'm biased. He's my nephew. But look at this face! Is he not the cutest thing ever? He's like a little buddha, especially in this serene background. Benjamin Hudson Watanabe and his cute head. I couldn't not blog about this photo from over the weekend.

Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together

This is a bag of sausage-flavored potato chips I saw at R. Field at Foodland tonight. Sausage with whole-grain mustard, to be precise. Can you stand it? I can't. I wanted to buy them, but I was scared. What if they're really, really good, and I end up wanting them everyday? Then what? They're made in England, by a company called Tyrrell's. I love the English and their food. I don't get the bad rap they've always gotten when it comes to food. If they've come up with sausage-flavored potato chips, they must know a thing or two.

The World Is Yours

I want to see the director's vision of what hip-hop in '94 meant to him set within a story about a pot dealer, his shrink and the girl he likes (the shrink's stepdaughter). A coming-of-age love story set in 1994 NYC with a hip-hop soundtrack? Sounds like my dream movie. I was a part of a hip-hop magazine called The Flavor back then. My pager code was "55." The Wackness opened in NYC and LA this weekend.

It's Like That

Run's House Season 5 premieres on July 16. I can't wait. I'm a sucker for family-reality shows (The Osbournes, Gene Simmons' Family Jewels, Hogan Knows Best, Keeping Up with the Kardashians), but Run's House is the best of all of them. And the Rev's Words of Wisdom? Priceless.

Bliss On My List

I'm in love with Bliss Lau's jewelry collection–chain jewelry pieces that can be worn on the body in multiple ways. I love the simplicity of Bolero, which can be worn as a vest, necklace, cape, or wrapped around the wrist as a bracelet. Do you own one piece of jewelry that can do all that? All of  the pieces have brass and leather details. My other favorite styles are Tuxedo, Ponytail Top and Diamond Dress. Bliss, you are a genius.
