MM-YAY Expo + Chili Cookoff

Stopped by the Blaisdell to check out the MMA Expo and saw my friend Tiff win her exhibition match. YAY! Then, I headed over to Flavors of Honolulu to watch Russ Yamanoha and Rob DeMello challenge John Aeto and Frank B. Shaner to a chili cookoff. Actually, they didn't know that they would be making chili until they arrived. It was like Iron Chef, but these guys aren't chefs. It started off with Rob admitting to the audience he couldn't cook at all. On the other side, Frank and John were acting like pros, chopping away and just looking more comfortable cooking. Back on Team Russ & Rob, Rob was not able to even open a can of beans. It was looking bleak for Team Russ & Rob–would they even make something edible? Fighter's Club Radio host Mark Kurano was there for some sous chef support and helped carry Team Russ & Rob to a very, very, very surprising victory. Russ killed it with the idea for presentation–serving the chili in bell pepper halves! I tried the winning chili and let me tell you, it was good. I wanted more.

Shu!

I've always been fascinated with Shu Uemura. When the store was still open on Greene Street in New York, I would walk in and be mesmerized by the walls of eye shadow and lip colors. But I would leave without buying anything; It looked so beautiful, but I think I was intimidated. And, I was probably running late on my way to Kelly & Ping to eat noodles. In fact, the only Shu Uemura item I had for a long time was the Shu Uemura eyelash curler. When the Shu Uemura boutique opened in Neiman Marcus Ala Moana Center, I was excited to see all those colors again. And it was the visual stimulation that sucked me in and subsequently hooked me for life. I bought a bottle of limited edition Cleansing Oil featuring artwork by Ai Yamaguchi. I fell in love with it, and continue to use Cleansing Oil Premium A/O today. I've tried other Shu Uemura products over time and they have become staples in my skin and makeup arsenal–Mascara Basic, Fiber Xtension Lengthening Mascara, Liquid Eyeliner Pen, Rouge Unlimited Lipsticks, and UV Under Base SPF 10. Today at the Shu Uemura boutique at Neiman Marcus, Gina Brooke (upper left pic, she's on the right), Artistic Director of Shu Uemura met with local clients to give them one-on-one skin, color and makeup consultations. It was such a treat to talk to her and get her advice on skincare and color, and learn more about the Shu Uemura brand. So this summer I'll be wearing M Orange 55 on my cheeks and a bit of Peach Sweet Lip Gloss on my lips. And the new secret Shu weapon–Cover Crayon–a concealer that I'll be using on my eyelids for my "no makeup" makeup look.

"I'm Gonna Getcha Getcha Getcha Getcha..."

One Way or Another: Asian American Art Now is up at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Seventeen artists from across the country present their works that "defy a definitive conception of Asian-American art." I don't know if I have a definitive conception of Asian-American art, but I know I liked Xavier Cha's landscaping tags (video), Indigo Som's photos of Chinese restaurants in the South, and Ala Ebtekar's white room complete with boombox, piece of linoleum, and shell toe Adidas. Check out the rest of works at the exhibit, up until August 31. One Way or Another: Asian American Art Now is a part of Asian Sensation, Honolulu Academy of Arts 2008 Summer Exhibitions.

So So Cheap

There are sales going on everywhere. Like, super good sales (up to 70% off) at some places to make room for all the Fall 08 merchandise that's coming in... I've been talking about getting some new jeans and most styles at Levi's are 50% off. That means I got TWO pairs for $60! Don't forget Neimans and Nordstroms–lots of sale racks to go through. And check out all the local boutiques for great deals, too. Sales make me happy.

YSL S/S 08 + Kate Moss

They've been running for awhile now, but the YSL S/S 08 ads featuring Kate Moss "through the glass" are stunning. I love the whole thing–concept, Kate with bangs, YSL, Inez & Vinoodh. Hands down, my favorite ad campaign of the season.

"Lemonade Was A Popular Drink And It Still Is..."

Jeff Lewis is back. Season 2 of Flipping Out on Bravo starts tomorrow! A favorite quote from last season if Jeff giving a drink order: "Ideally, 70 percent lemonade, 20 percent fruit punch, 10 percent Sprite. If they don't have fruit punch, do, like 85 percent lemonade and 15 percent Sprite. If they don't have lemonade, do 85 percent punch and 15 percent Sprite. Or 7-Up." I just love this guy.

Summertime, Summertime

Fighting Eel Summer 08 is b-a-n-a-n-a-s. If you see me around this summer, I'll be wearing one of these dresses. I had to edit my wishlist (the whole Summer 08 collection) to these four. I've said it before and I'll say it again...I love Fighting Eel. Happy Summer

Tow!

We had a great photo shoot yesterday. Justin (from Kicks) styled our first ever men's fashion feature! Ryan wore the clothes. Aaron VB took the pics. Aly assisted. We finished everything up and then Justin's truck just stopped working. It wouldn't start. So we called AAA and the tow truck came. Aren't tow trucks cool? And aren't you excited to see the Sept/Oct issue and the men's fashion feature?!

Blazing Hot

I'm loving this blazer trend for spring/summer. It's been on my radar for a few weeks now, and then I got this email from www.whowhatweardaily.com. Too bad it's too hot for our Hawaii summers. I've seen the trend worn with shorts on the runway, and Miss Kate Moss has already been spotted rocking a blazer with denim cut-offs (remember how much you loved those once upon a time--well, they're back!). The new cuts on these blazers are awesome: slim, details on the sleeve, lightweight. Elizabeth and James had some good ones for spring that may be on sale now...hmm, there's an idea...

Hawaii Love

Hung out in Waikiki over the weekend and stopped by the new Bebe store in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Bebe loves us! RHSC is no joke–new Kate Spade store, Koi Boutique (carrying Eugenia Kim hats!), Furla, Juicy Couture, Fendi, Bvlgari, Hermes and more. After shopping, have dinner at Doraku. And they're not done with the renovation. More stores and Waikiki Nei opening soon.
